A useful price history keeps the exact product: the manufacturer part number, the configuration, the condition, which shop it was, and the moment it was seen. No public index carries any of those fields, so no index can stand in for it, however much it looks like a price line on a chart.

What the semiconductor index has done

The file contains 114 monthly observations from 2017-01 through 2026-06 with no missing month. The index began at 36.400, reached a retained high of 36.700 in April 2017, reached a retained low of 29.392 in August 2025, and ended at 29.695 in June 2026. The last value was 0.4% below its trailing 12-month mean of 29.829, 0.6% below June 2025, and 18.4% below January 2017. March through June 2026 are provisional. This is evidence that the broad semiconductor-manufacturing index sat close to its own recent mean in June 2026. The consumer backdrop has a gap

The not-seasonally-adjusted BLS index for computers, peripherals, and smart home assistants contains 113 observations from 2017-01 through 2026-06. October 2025 is absent from the retained source response and has not been interpolated. Why the retail status remains not enough data to judge

Once a retention-cleared price record begins, a retrospective product state requires at least 14 days, 10 usable price readings, and 60% coverage. The tested recommendation also remains disabled after the observation window fills. In the 2026-07-26 no-lookahead backtest, waiting was contradicted in 29 of 48 testable three-month signals, or 60.4%, and buying was contradicted in 62 of 118, or 52.5%.
