CMR vs SMR hard drives
CMR and SMR describe how data tracks are arranged on a hard drive. SMR overlaps tracks to increase recording density. Check the exact model and capacity rather than inferring the technology from the brand or price.
Use the manufacturer's model list
Seagate publishes recording technology by product family and capacity. Its IronWolf and IronWolf Pro rows are listed under CMR, while Exos includes different recording technologies. A broad family name is therefore not a safe substitute for an exact model check.
For a NAS, check enclosure support
Match the drive model and interface to the enclosure's supported-drive list. The price page can compare capacity and cost, but a retailer title does not establish enclosure support or sustained write behaviour.
Compare price after the technology check
Use price per TB within the acceptable models and conditions. For a multi-drive array, compare usable capacity after mirroring or parity rather than adding the labels on the boxes.
