What the figures show
Rises outnumbered falls about four to one: 388 against 96. 84% of the products kept the same price, so the typical product did not move and the change comes from the ones that did.
Since our record began on Aug 3, 2026, RAM prices have risen 0.9% on this measure, to 100.9.
We collected prices on 19 of the month's 29 days in our record; 10 days are missing. A missing day is a break in the line; nothing is filled in.

Same products, each counted once
Each month compares the same products at both ends: every RAM product, identified by its barcode, that Newegg priced on the last day we collected in the month before (Aug 3) and on the last day we collected in this month (Aug 26). That covers every kind and condition Newegg lists with a barcode, desktop, laptop and server memory alike. A product that arrived or left during the month is not in the comparison, so a change in what is on sale does not move the index.
Each product counts once, whatever it costs: the index takes the geometric mean of the products' price changes, the way statistical offices build a price index from shop prices, so one expensive server part cannot outweigh a hundred desktop ones. The months are chained: the index was 100 on Aug 3, 2026, the first day of our record, and each month multiplies it by that month's change.
Because the price of the same product per GB changes exactly as its price does, this is also the change in what a GB of RAM costs. The median price per GB is a different measure: it also moves when cheaper or dearer products come and go. One retailer, US dollars, before tax and shipping. Read how we collect and check prices.
