No shop has approved a price feed for this site: Rakuten Product Catalog technical approval, and the separate Newegg advertiser-feed approval, neither of which has been supplied for this property. Rather than copy prices we have no right to publish, we left them out and built the parts of the job that do not need them.

Month by month

That is a US government index for a whole category of goods, which we are free to keep and calculate from. It is not the price of a board model, and it must not be read as one: a category can move while the exact part you want does not, and the other way round. The published match rating for this series against motherboard is good, and it stays on the panel rather than the index being quietly treated as exact.

2. What is not measured?

A real timing answer needs the same exact part priced over and over, from a source we are allowed to keep. We hold none, because no shop has approved a feed for this site yet. Nothing on this page is loading or broken; the record simply does not exist, and it cannot be filled in backwards once it does. That is the honest difference between this page and a chart built from prices someone copied without permission.

3. Why not just call it anyway?

We wrote the buy-or-wait rule and tested it against 1,252 past decisions across 11 index series, with no hindsight: every decision used only what had been published before that date. At three months, 29 of 48 wait signals were followed by a higher index. At six months, 74.5% were. A rule that is wrong more often than a coin toss is worse than useless, because people would act on it, so it is switched off in code and a test keeps it off.

4. What would change this page?

Three specific thresholds, all of which have to be met: at least 10 usable prices for one exact board model, gathered across at least 14 days, covering at least 60% of the offers we would expect to find. Any one of them failing keeps this page exactly as it is.

Note what all three passing would produce: a statement about where today's price sits against that part's own recent past. Still not a forecast. We would need a different and much higher bar before publishing one of those, and we may never clear it.

5. How complete would the data be?

Coverage is the share of the offers we would expect to find that a collection run actually matched. We report it as unavailable rather than as zero, because zero would suggest we ran a collection and found nothing. No collection has run: no source has given permission for one.

This matters more than it sounds. If a large shop drops out of a feed, the average price jumps and a naive tracker reports a rise that never happened. When collection does start, a run covering less than 60% of the comparison period suspends the answer rather than recalculating a direction from the smaller sample.

In detail

What the evidence does say about motherboards

The retained data cannot date a retail motherboard price change. It does show an unusual manufacturing split: the printed-circuit-assembly index is far above its recent mean, while the bare-board index is elevated by much less. Preserving that disagreement is more useful than averaging it away.

The two current readings

The BLS printed-circuit-assembly manufacturing index was 187.709 in June 2026. It was 50.4% above its trailing 12-month mean of 124.811 and 165.1% above June 2025. The series was nearly unchanged from 187.691 in April and 187.688 in May. March through June 2026 are provisional. BLS series PCU334418334418, read from the retained file fetched 25 July 2026.

The bare printed-circuit-board manufacturing index was 156.994 in June 2026. It was 8.6% above its trailing 12-month mean of 144.626 and 17.3% above June 2025. It moved from 156.842 in March and April to 156.994 in May and June. March through June 2026 are provisional. BLS series PCU334412334412, read from the retained file fetched 25 July 2026.

Both indexes are at retained highs, but their magnitudes are not close. The assembly series is on a three-month plateau after a much larger move. The bare-board series is also flat recently, at a level modestly above its own recent average.

Why these are not motherboard prices

One index measures assembled printed-circuit products and the other measures bare boards. A retail motherboard adds chipset, CPU socket, power delivery, connectors, wireless hardware, firmware, packaging, distribution, merchant inventory, and margin. Neither BLS file identifies a chipset, form factor, manufacturer part number, hardware revision, seller, or dollar price. BLS definitions and source registry, reviewed 2026-07-25.

Hardware revision is especially important here. Two boards sold under similar names can use different component revisions, and a chipset family contains entry models and premium models that are not substitutes. A valid retail series must preserve exact product identity, region, condition, merchant, and observation time. Product-identity methodology, published 2026-07-26.

What preceded the current manufacturing split

The bare-board series made its largest recent step first, moving from 134.369 in December 2025 to 153.070 in January 2026, a 13.9% increase. The assembly series was 99.132 in January 2026, then moved to 141.060 in February, a 42.3% increase, and to 187.691 in April, a further 24.6% increase from March. In this retained episode, movement in the bare-board index appeared one month before the first large assembly-index step. BLS does not assign a cause, and the sequence does not establish a lead-lag rule for retail motherboards. It does identify the two production layers a reader should check separately.

The condition to watch

The current manufacturing picture would change from a high plateau to coordinated lower movement only if both BLS series record two successive month-over-month decreases and later revisions preserve them. For the first comparison, the assembly line must move below its April through June 2026 band of 187.688 to 187.709, while the bare-board line must move below its March through June 2026 band of 156.842 to 156.994. For retail boards, watch the source registry for an approved offer source. A same-board, same-revision price record then needs at least 14 days, 10 usable price readings, and 60% coverage before a retrospective state is available. Price-state methodology, published 2026-07-26.

Why there is no buying instruction

The buy-or-wait rule was tested without lookahead over 1,252 observed series-months across 11 BLS series. At three months, 29 of 48 testable wait signals were contradicted, a 60.4% failure rate above the pre-declared 40% limit. The rule is switched off. The checkable answer is narrower: both manufacturing layers are elevated and currently flat, but by very different amounts. Two confirmed lower readings in both would change that public context. They would not, by themselves, answer when a named motherboard becomes cheaper.
