How much SSD storage do I need?
Add the space used by your files, applications and operating system, then add the growth and working space you choose to allow. Compare that requirement with usable capacity, rather than treating a drive's advertised TB as the space left for files.
Use your own storage figures
For an arithmetic example, 350 GB of existing files plus 200 GB of applications plus 150 GB of planned additions equals 700 GB before filesystem overhead. Those inputs are an example, not a recommended capacity for every computer.
Why the displayed capacity differs
A marketed terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Dividing by 1,099,511,627,776 bytes per TiB gives about 0.909 TiB. Formatting, system partitions and reserved space can reduce the space available for files further. The calculator keeps those allowances separate.
Capacity does not determine fit
Check the drive's interface and form factor against the computer's supported slot or bay. The SSD list labels manufacturer specifications separately from specifications in a listing title.
