Why are power supply prices so high?
There is a real answer to part of this question and an honest limit to the rest. The measured part is what the US government's factory-level and consumer indexes have done. The limit is that no source we hold can tell you how much of the difference sits in chip supply, product mix, distribution or shop margin.

What the factory-level indexes are doing
These are the series that track power supplies more closely than a general shopping basket does. Each figure is the index level against its own previous twelve reported months.

What we cannot tell you, and why
No breakdown of the gap is published here
Our sources can show a gap between a factory-level index and what people report paying. They cannot say how much of that gap sits in chip supply, in which products are being made, in module assembly, in distributor stock or in shop margin, because no source we hold reports those layers separately.
Picking one of them and naming it would be a story rather than a measurement. Plenty of articles will give you that story. We would rather show you the two numbers and say plainly that the distance between them is unexplained by anything we can cite.

Start with the limitation
There is no strong public PSU price index in the retained data. Both assigned BLS series are explicitly rated weak fits. Other electronic component manufacturing includes a broad collection of components, and All other miscellaneous electrical equipment and component manufacturing is broader still. The latest numbers reinforce the need for restraint. Other electronic component manufacturing was 2.3% above its trailing 12-month mean in June 2026 and 3.6% above June 2025. Miscellaneous electrical equipment and component manufacturing was 2.4% below its trailing mean and 3.4% below June 2025. That conflict is not evidence that PSU prices are stable. It is evidence that these categories cannot supply a clean PSU conclusion. Their raw index levels, 177.486 and 160.127, also cannot be compared with each other because each index has its own base. The only defensible comparison is each series against itself over time. What the weak readings are still good for
The series can act as tripwires for a broad shock. If both unrelated manufacturing buckets moved sharply and persistently in the same direction, that would justify investigating whether a common electrical-component pressure was reaching power supplies. They do not currently provide that aligned signal. One is mildly above its recent mean while the other is mildly below it. The whole-computer backdrop is similarly quiet but no more specific. Electronic computer manufacturing was 0.1% above its trailing 12-month mean in June 2026 and 0.8% above June 2025. The consumer index for Computers, peripherals, and smart home assistants was 1.0% above its mean and 0.8% below June 2025. A finished PC basket can absorb movement in one component through changes elsewhere, so these readings cannot price a standalone PSU. The evidence a PSU answer needs
A useful retail measurement has to keep the product comparable. Wattage band, efficiency certification, modularity, connector set, warranty and exact model should be recorded alongside seller, stock status and timestamp. Those fields prevent a cheap low-capacity unit and a high-capacity premium unit from being averaged into a number that describes neither. The current BLS files contain none of them.
Quality evidence must remain separate from price evidence. These manufacturing indexes contain no electrical testing, protection behavior, noise, efficiency result or certification record for an individual unit. They cannot support a tier judgment. A low offer is not evidence of low quality, and a high offer is not evidence of high quality. The project’s source registry marks the fit as weak precisely to prevent that inference. What would have to change
For the public-index reading to become more informative, both weak proxies would need a sustained, same-direction movement large enough to stand out from their own recent ranges. Even then, the result would remain an alert, not a PSU index. Confirmation would require the repeated model-level basket moving in the same direction after accounting for wattage and certification.
A different market state could also appear only in the retail record. If comparable PSU models changed while both BLS series stayed near their trailing means, the cause would be more likely to sit in PSU-specific products or the channel than in these broad manufacturing categories. If retail and both proxies moved together over several observations, a common upstream explanation would deserve more weight. These are conditions for updating the explanation, not predictions.
What we cannot tell you now
We cannot tell whether PSUs as a category are expensive, cheap or near normal from the retained public data. We cannot calculate a fair dollar price, identify a shortage, separate factory cost from retail margin, or compare value between two models. No current external source under the required 30-day window supplied a transparent, repeatable US PSU basket that fixed those gaps.
The useful answer is therefore an abstention with boundaries. One weak proxy is 2.3% above its recent mean; the other is 2.4% below. That disagreement contains no category-level PSU direction. A model-level retail record and independent product-quality evidence are the things that would change the answer.
